ABSTRACT

When Adolphe Reinach took the responsibility for the edition of the volumes dedicated to the Greek and Latin sources on the history of ancient art in 1911, he personally took charge of the book on ancient painting. In this respect, it is possible to identify some interesting elements of comparison between the state of research on these topics on the eve of the first world war and that of today, which both represent a fundamental stage in the historical studies on classical painting. The desire to access the written sources about ancient art through translated texts was that of the painter Paul Milliet. Paul Milliet belonged to a republican and “fouriériste” family, which he affectionately describes in his memoirs published in 1915. He is an archetypal example of someone who was “un innovateur en politique et en matière sociale.
