ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the first research question of the Sorgente study, considering the methodology and methods informing the research, that is, arts-based methodology and arts-based methods, in the context of performative language pedagogy with refugees and migrants. To begin with, the chapter illustrates the behind the scenes of the research design, providing an insight into how the research questions came into being. Next, it addresses the methodological framework of the study, arts-based methodology, and the informing paradigm, embodied inquiry in qualitative research. It then provides a methodological overview of the research methods used in the study: zine-making, language portraits, observational sketching, visual imagery as method, narrative as method, poetry as method, practice as research, applied theatre as research and research-based theatre. For each method, the chapter provides a brief history and its applications to the study. Finally, the chapter discusses some ethical considerations related to conducting arts-based research with refugees and migrants.
