ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the delivery and impacts of a zine workshop delivered to members of the Sorgente project. The Sorgente project utilised multiple arts-based practices in order to investigate the teaching and learning of additional languages with migrants and refugees in Ireland and Italy. The zines emerged as a theme in response to the first research question of the project which asked, “How can embodied research methods be used effectively in arts-based educational research within the context of the study?” through demonstrating a potent and unifying tool for supporting facilitators in reflecting on, and sharing, their values and goals for second language learning and identity formation. Through the activity participating educators and facilitators reframed language teaching as a process of ‘language growing’ and holding space to honour participants’ multicultural and multilingual identities. The zine-making activity also surfaced shared values of collaboration, and created brave spaces for vulnerability, as well as fostering a sense of play and experimentation through an ethos of there being ‘no right and wrong’ way to participate. These themes are reflected throughout the project.
