ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the position of Indian women in their personal spaces, in the background of some of the most common patriarchal practices affecting their political opinion and participation. It analyzes the position of women as decision-makers in their households. Further, it discusses women’s autonomy of political participation and highlights women’s opinion on some of the important questions about their political participation. It also looks at some of the most common practices adding to the seclusion of women and the consequential impact of the same on their participation in political activities. Thus, it attempts to understand the correlation between the position of women in their households and their participation in politics through the prism of these varying socioeconomic and cultural factors.
