ABSTRACT

Over the centuries, the Bhagavad-gītā has been interpreted in many ways. This chapter examines the interpretation of the text from the perspective of Shankara and his Advaita Vedanta philosophical perspective that he brings with him to his examination of the text. Because of the heavily theistic nature of the Gītā, Shankara’s hermeneutical convictions and metaphysical certainties motivate him to deconstruct the theistic features of the Gītā by adhering to his beliefs about the role of revelation, his method of sublation, and his philosophical preunderstanding.
