ABSTRACT

The Bhagavad-gītā was a popular subject of commentaries and essays in the first half of the 20th century, and this remained true after India became independent of British rule in 1947. However, the character of the authors changed in the later period, with most of the prominent commentaries written by popular gurus, not by political leaders. This chapter is dedicated to analysing five gurus’ commentaries and the trends in Indian society that they might be said to represent.
