ABSTRACT

Broad principles for early intervention with survivors of disastrous events have been articulated in influential publications, such as the Psychological First Aid protocol (PFA; Brymer et al., 2006) and the “five essential elements” article (Hobfoll et al., 2007). However, technical guidance is lacking for child-focused interventionists, who seek to apply these tenets in developmentally sensitive ways during interventions with children and adolescents. Using the core actions of the PFA and the five essential elements as a conceptual framework, several early intervention techniques are proposed in this chapter. These intervention strategies highlight the practical and developmental benefits of group- and play-based interventions approaches.
