ABSTRACT

Children and adolescents across the spectrum of autism often struggle with social and relational skills, especially when interacting with peers. The ability to naturalistically practice skill development is critical to those with autism if gains in social and relational ability are to be improved. This chapter highlights a play therapy-based group model that is specifically focused on autistic children and adolescents. The AutPlay® Therapy Play and Social Skills Groups Model is presented with pragmatic implementation, structured processes, and a case illustration. This group protocol addresses the social and relational deficits that can occur in children and adolescents with autism. Information is provided describing how to implement this ten-session group process which includes parent training and participation.
