ABSTRACT
This short story is taken from the collection Vishramika pemwathiya 1 (The Retired Girlfriend) and deals with the complexities of economic immigrants being expected to love their mother country when they have no connection with it at all, except for the fact of having immigrant parents. The injustice of still having the right for land , proven legally by a deed, when there are so many landless people living in the country, especially in disputed areas where they couldn’t move back, is also highlighted here. The pain of living in war-ravaged land is shown parallel to the indigenous animals dying a painful death in the Amazon fires of 2019. The role of religious clergy in keeping a feeling of loyalty to the motherland alive in diasporic communities, and also the unscrupulous land grabbing by wealthy traders – not really people in need of land – in the mother country making the problem more complicated, is also referenced here.
