ABSTRACT

In this chapter, some of the basic floor types are presented together with methods of interpretations within church archaeology. Through the centuries, the flooring in churches has been changed on several occasions, sometimes changing from clay to wood to mortar and stones. On different occasions, burials have been placed under the floors and building structures have been extended. In sum, activities under the floors in churches that have been in use continuously for many centuries are diverse and reoccurring, all with consequences for how we should interpret and understand the archaeology. Therefore, it is important to choose the excavation strategy and methods with consideration.
