ABSTRACT

This contribution presents a new interpretation of the construction of the earliest stave church in Eidskog, a revised chronology of the construction of the second stave church, and an analysis of the 485 coin finds related to Eidskog as an important place for the cult of St. Olav and pilgrimage from Sweden. Eidskog church is a small parish church in the south-eastern part of Norway, bordering the county of Värmland in Sweden. Eidskog church was centrally located on the main wintertime road from Sweden to Norway, a road that also developed into an important pilgrim route in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Remains of two older stave churches were discovered on the site of the present-day church during archaeological excavations in 1965. The present-day log church was built in 1665.
