ABSTRACT

Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) has become statutory in schools in England, and government guidance states that all schools may teach about faith perspectives. This chapter will present an approach to public engagement that seeks to commend Christian truth claims through a constructive apologetic in public discourse and in the classroom. Through engagement with policy guidance and wider social analysis, I will make the case for why a Christian understanding of human flourishing can bring life and meaning to the moral, social and spiritual education that children and young people can receive through this subject. In particular, the attention given within the guidance to the attributes of a healthy and flourishing relationship, as well as to delaying sexual activity, offer two particular points of common ground from which to build an effective apologetic.
