ABSTRACT

In this chapter I offer a review of evangelical practical theology by noting two overview chapters and four examples of books written by influential evangelical practical theologians. It draws attention to key themes and then discusses how evangelical practical theologians have uses the sources of theology (Scripture, tradition, reason, and experience) in their work and offers a critique. Finally, it anticipates the future trajectory of evangelical practical theology and suggests that the sector may develop best by adopting a collaborative approach that addresses seven main areas: the role of evangelical tradition, the crossing of theological sub-disciplinary boundaries, a deeper engagement with the social sciences, more enthusiasm for empirical research, attention to intercultural and non-western voices, concern for and an ability to address issues in public life, and greater engagement with digitally mediated Christianity.
