ABSTRACT

Practical theology is goal-oriented in seeking to put into practice a theological vision for action. In this chapter I explore how practical theology navigates the relationship between theology and social science. Two forms of doing theology are discussed: descriptive and imperative. Theology provides a goal for action that can be justified and critically evaluated. As regards the goal or purpose (telos) that theology provides, I examine Kelsey’s plurality of teloi, and provide an illustration of how identifying this plurality informs practical theologising.
