ABSTRACT

Education reform in China proposed schools to cultivate students' core learning competencies, which requires schools to make systemic changes to better support student development. Effective and comprehensive methods are adopted to develop intellectual capital and stimulate the vitality of schooling. A Shanghai middle school case study was conducted to identify effective strategies to develop intellectual capital for school improvement. The findings indicated that the case school has a strong human capital in principal leadership and teachers' abilities. Second, the school makes use of its structural capital, such as flexible curriculum mechanism, teaching guidelines, in-service training system, and the culture of organisational management, as a framework to support educational behaviours. Third, the case school develops relational capital by building relationships with parents, communities, and experts for inclusive stakeholder engagement. These elements of school intellectual capital promote school efficiency, develop teaching quality, and increase student learning outcomes.
