ABSTRACT
Krishna Sobti was an embodiment of a counter archive in her writings as much as in her living. Krishna Sobti’s fiction offers an abundant array of characters who assert the power of their personalities with an absolute nonchalance for societal reaction or even sanction. The unthinking division of the communities along with the brutal violence and forced migrations that followed created for Sobti the context to visit the inner recesses of her mind to feel the richness of the common heritage. Krishna Sobti’s pen reflects linguistic democracy that includes the language of silence. Sobti’s keen eye for the diversity of cultural contexts within the country steers her consciousness towards the portrayal of a variety of feminisms in India. In her constant resistance to the established norms of behaviour, language usage and mode of living, Krishna Sobti stands tall as a counter archive seeking a compelling attention.
