ABSTRACT

The continuity of family traditions and the social conduct held great importance. All in all, the novel tells the story of human relationships – about families whose relations were fixed and so was their status, especially the relationships between women and men. In a world run by men, the roles, rights and status of women are all defined. Yet in spite of everything, the mistress or the kept woman can never claim the respectability and the stable status given to the wedded wife by the society. It is important for a woman to identify and grab the opportunity at the right moment. There was no feminist defiance in the backdrop, nor any sudden impulse or a religious decree.
