ABSTRACT
Krishna Sobti’s true distinction lay in the fact that she had delineated the rural life of pre-Partition Punjab with great intensity. Not only did this include the farmer and several other communities but also the fragrance of their parlance and incessant struggle, the brio that emerged from within the tribulations of life, the conflict in relationships and the dark shadow of some impending doom. Krishna Sobti was supremely proficient in using different shades and styles in language and in creating characters dexterously. Since Krishna Sobti herself came from an aggrieved family, and was a writer in whose heart and mind, the pangs of displacement had stayed like a primeval thorn, she was compelled to do so. Krishna Sobti had the gift of possessing an abundant store of rustic language. It was possible to polish it to the level of standard Hindi, but she was very proud of her language and style.
