ABSTRACT

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) in Africa has had some media success. CSR is therefore particularly topical in this continent. A manifesto was signed in November 2011 in Douala during the first meeting of the ‘pioneers of CSR in Africa’. The critical approach to CSR has already been the subject of an abundant literature although it is noteworthy that it focuses on Western countries. Some non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working in Africa insist on the need to include the foreign company in its territorial environment, recreate a ‘family spirit’ between employees and ensure permanent dialogue with local, traditional or administrative authorities. The mining sector, specifically gold mining, represents very high economic stakes for the countries concerned. Mining activities generally have a major impact on the environment: use of large amounts of water and residue, hazardous materials, soil degradation, poor air quality, noise and vibrations, energy consumption and effects on the landscape.
