ABSTRACT

By synthesizing Nicholas Mirzoeff’s White Supremacy Scene, Hortense J. Spillers’ model of racialized gender, and C. Riley Snorton’s work on fungible fugitivity, this chapter offers a new revision of the Anthropocene: the Trans*Plantationocene. This redress names a global emergency as well as a way of reading that emergency, demonstrating a failure in Anthropocenic scholarship to grapple with gender, sexuality, and racialized embodiment, which, given the nature of the manifold problems environmental degradation entails, is a significant oversight. This chapter uses the film Tangerine (2015) as a case study in brief.
