ABSTRACT

Nowadays it is observed that people share, through digital platforms, their assets and resources. Airbnb has now become a global phenomenon due to the expansion of sharing economy platforms worldwide. Tourism has proven to be one of the areas most affected by Airbnb for several reasons. The increasing use of technology, as well as changes in travellers’ attitudes and perceptions, has shifted the focus from products and services to the experience economy. As a consequence, there has been an ongoing debate over Airbnb’s influence on tourism and the consequences of the emerging shift of travellers’ preferences from traditional tourism services to new short-term leasing models. The impact of Airbnb on the tourism economy increasingly interests researchers.
