ABSTRACT

Business education is facing unprecedented challenges, including criticisms that stem primarily from differing expectations of multiple stakeholders. These stakeholders broadly speaking include a new generation of learners (“Gen Z”), organizations who desire workforce ready graduates, and society, which as a whole wants business schools to contribute to solving some of society's grand challenges. In this chapter, we discuss these tensions and provide a framework for how business education can meet the expectations of these different constituencies. Our call to action includes a path to increased value of business education through interdisciplinary work, working at the intersection of academia and practice, and being drivers of change as opposed to reactors to change. Lastly, we describe how the new AACSB 2020 business accreditation standards provide the roadmap to operationalize that path, with a particular focus on how AACSB is leading the effort to further elevate business education as a force for good in society.
