ABSTRACT
This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses the question of translation, both literal and metaphoric — how translation is tied to the significant personalities involved, and its essential role in the development of the International Journal. It looks at translation and transformation into representation. From the early days of psychoanalysis, Freud privileged visual representation and transformation into visual images. The book approaches the question of transformation in two ways: first, in terms of the transformation of conscious, unconscious, and non-represented elements into non-verbal modes of presentation, in particular visual, poetic, and musical; second, in terms of the development within the International Journal over a 100 years of the discourse between psychoanalysis and artistic expressions. It discusses a different sensibility to psychoanalysis: rather than visual representation, they seek to describe what lies beyond words.
