ABSTRACT
This chapter aims to demonstrate the extent to which quality standards affect revision practices among translation service providers (TSPs) in Austria. We begin with an overview of standards developed for TSPs, focusing on recommendations for reviewing translations and for other-revision. Revision has become an essential element of translation quality assurance, especially since the publication of EN 15038 in 2006 and ISO 17100 in 2015. Next we consider standard-based certification and registration and describe the difference between these two processes. The main part of the chapter presents the results of a 2015 online survey and a 2016 interview study about the acceptance of certification and registration among Austrian TSPs. We then examine whether, according to the participating TSPs, other-revision is compulsory in their practice, and we address the rate of acceptance and application of EN 15038/ISO 17100. The results show that two-thirds of the certified companies revise every translation, whereas almost three-quarters of the uncertified companies that claim to work in line with EN 15038 do so. Also, a large majority of the certified companies work with revision parameters. Considering all the aspects investigated, EN 15038 and ISO 17100 seem to have had an influence on the professional activities of TSPs.
