ABSTRACT

Broad access institutions (BAIs) are essential to the ecosystem of the U.S. higher education system. These institutions enhance college access, educate, and provide social mobility for a significant proportion of the undergraduate student population. Central to those efforts are the faculty members at these colleges and universities. Despite their integral roles, very little is known about the contexts of academic work lives, distinct professional responsibilities, student engagement work, and academic hiring processes of BAI faculty. Here, we address these aspects of the faculty careers at BAIs, extending and providing nuance around an understudied segment of the professoriate within and across BAIs. Finally, we offer practical suggestions for making appreciable differences in the lived experiences of this critical group of the academic workforce.
