ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the contributions of broadly accessible bachelor’s degree granting colleges and universities in serving historically underrepresented and racially and ethnically marginalized populations. To do this, it looks at data on fall enrollment, bachelor’s degree completions by field of study, and completion rates from the most recent available data compiled by the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS). Data on measures of student costs and aid, such as average net price, utilization of grants, and cumulative debt upon graduation were drawn from the 2015–2016 edition of the National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (NPSAS:16). The chapter concludes with a brief discussion of what these data tell us about the need to support the broad access mission of these institutions.
