ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to examine the intersection between broad access institutions (BAIs) and transfer. We explored the alignment between BAIs and institutions that enroll large proportions of transfer students to understand the types of institutions that offer broad access to both freshman and transfer students, or one or the other. Our analysis uses the IPEDS Enrollment survey and Outcome Measures survey to identify how BAIs are accessible to transfer students and how they help them succeed. We conclude the chapter by discussing BAI’s role transfer student success, the need to expand the notion of BAIs to consider transfer students, and considerations for future research.
