ABSTRACT

The chapters in this volume provide a foundation for constructing a series of counter-narratives of BAIs, which in combination recognize their unique value and strengths. These counter-narratives underscore the role of BAIs in unlocking opportunity, particularly for students who historically have been and continue to be marginalized in higher education. In this chapter, we bring the evidence and arguments presented throughout the volume into conversation with one another in order to articulate these counter-narratives more cohesively. Through this synthesis, we identify four domains in which BAIs unlock opportunity. We integrate these domains into an emerging conceptualization of how postsecondary institutions foster opportunity.
