Introduction

This chapter introduces bachelor’s degree granting accessible institutions (BAIs). We begin with a summary of the history and evolution of BAIs followed by a discussion and comparison of ways that BAIs have been defined and differentiated. Next, we bring attention to the ways in which deficit-based perspectives of BAIs are commonly incentivized, rewarded, and normalized. We conclude with a brief overview of the purpose and structure of this volume.
