ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 identifies and problematizes several assumptions about bachelor’s granting accessible institutions (BAIs) including: (a) enough is known about BAIs; (b) elite universities provide a better educational experience when compared to BAIs; and (c) bachelor’s granting institutions are a monolithic group. In doing so, we summarize relevant empirical findings specific to bachelor’s granting accessible institutions. We also use recent IPEDS data to compare broadly accessible and exclusionary institutions. We conclude with implications for leaders and policymakers and a call for additional equity-centered research and policy work on BAIs.
