ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the emerging trend of community college baccalaureate (CCB) adoption by states. Knowing community colleges are an important form of broad access institutions (BAI) and also recognizing that these institutions play an important role in expanding access to higher education, it was important to include the topic of CCB degrees in this volume. The chapter describes the evolving landscape for CCB degrees nationwide, using Washington as a case to delve more deeply into state-level scale-up of CCB degrees. We consider tensions between community colleges and universities that are reported in the extant research and also observed in Washington, and we also report on CCB enrollment, graduation, and employment to provide a snapshot of who accesses and completes these new baccalaureate programs.
