ABSTRACT

The speech of Earl Grey in the House of Lords, on Thursday evening last, affords another warning of the danger which threatens the British empire from the influence of men who are ruled by mere theories in matters wherein practical knowledge and experience are the only safe guides. Lord Grey’s remarks upon Free Trade as applied to our colonies. Large sums were annually voted by Parliament for the civil and religious establishments in our colonies, and these burdens being taken off the colonial landowners, was it common sense, or common justice or equity, that the principles of Free Trade should be withheld from them. If the English farmer could bear Free Trade, it would be on account of the circumstances with which the English farmer has to do.
