ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a letter of John Bright, a liberal politician, to Richard Cobden dated 16 April 1857 describing Colonial policy, trade and politics in Britain. Through the labors of Molesworth, Roebuck, and Hume, more recently supported by John Bright, & by Gladstone every article in the creed which directed the Colonial policy has been abandoned, & now men actually abhor the notion of undertaking the Government of the Colonies, on the contrary they give to every Colony that asks for it, a Constitution as democratic as that which exists in the United States. Manchester people are only fitted to be the humble serving-men, political domestics, of a Minister who makes use of what is called the liberal party whilst he hates all liberal measures. If people are rejected for peace & for truth, they stand higher before the world & for the future than if they mingled with the patient mediocrities which compose the present Cabinet.
