ABSTRACT

Mr Small from Dundee & Mr Mulholland from Belfast called to make representations respecting the linen & jute manufactures. At the Board of Trade to receive deputations, Mr Small from Dundee exhibited specimens of articles manufactured from jute, a fibre resembling hemp produced chiefly in Bengal of which 50,000 tons are imported, 40,000 of which are brought to Dundee, where only 16 tons were received about 25 years ago. Mr Mulholland from Belfast and Mr Ewart from Dundee explained the case of linen manufactures and yarn, and promised when sent for to come to Paris. Two manufacturers from Nottingham represented the articles of lace & hosiery, and explained the difficulty of levying specific duties on the great variety of articles made in that neighborhood. One of them said he dealt in several thousand which it would be impossible to classify.
