ABSTRACT

The procession of some 30,000 men and women, all resolute Tariff Reformers, with bands and banners, through the very citadel of Cobdenism, together with the magnificent buildings at Belle Vue Gardens, show that the hearts of the people of Lancashire are deeply stirred, and that Tariff Reform is to them the driving force of their whole political creed. The great Manchester demonstration proves that the Tariff Reformers of Lancashire are determined to keep to the front the cause for which they stand, and not to permit it to be eclipsed or obscured by any other cry whatever. It is well that Lancashire should lead the way in the fiscal reform controversy. It has passed into a proverb that “What Lancashire thinks today all England will think to-morrow.” It is open to any and every county of the kingdom to adopt similar methods and achieve a similar success.
