ABSTRACT

To-day, in the course of a Free Trade meeting held in respect of the Whitechapel by-election the speaker attacked the policy of food duties. Official Tariff Reform should make a clear statement. The Unionist Party have made great sacrifices for Tariff Reform. And for every Radical that Tariff Reform can produce a capture there have been hundreds of Unionists voting for a Free Trade Government, because they place greater stress upon the cost of living than Home Rule and Welsh Disestablishment. The Unionist party has made great sacrifices for Tariff Reform, and now it calls upon Tariff Reform to make a little sacrifice in return. The Tariff Reform League policy is one of principle, which in no way interferes with the Edinburgh policy. The Unionist party is in favour of full Imperial preference, including food taxes, but it has been agreed that the full policy should not attempted until after a second reference to the electors.
