ABSTRACT

Even the strongest and most sensitive upholders of Free Trade are forced to admit that a gross injustice is being inflicted upon our manufacturers, and that the time has come, if not for retaliating in specific form, at least for raising a national protest against the conduct of nearly all neighbours. The Chamber passed a resolution expressing its opinion that the duties hitherto imposed on coal, iron, chains and anchors, chemicals, glass, and paper are fully as much as they can bear, and protesting against the increase proposed, and the transparent subterfuge of adopting specific instead of ad valorem duties. Indeed, a movement has assumed definite form in London, and already received a large amount of support. At Bradford and Birmingham there is an almost unanimous condemnation of the proposed Treaty, and a distinctly declared determination to use every means for preventing its adoption.
