ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the internal and external support that assists Malaysian principals to develop as effective school leaders. It investigates the educational personnel who assisted the principals with their leadership journeys based on four major elements: professional identity as a school principal, providing relevant information on school’s administration policies, completion of administrative tasks and decision-making. The questions that were asked during the interview were related to the educational personnel who principals believe have supported them within their leadership journeys. The deputy principals were regarded as the essential people to assist principals with the school’s internal tasks and decision-making. Principals also talked about their sharing session with other principals as a source of their ‘on-the-job’ learning. Referring to the State Department of Education and District Education Office officers provides principals with more understanding and knowledge on the implementation strategies for recent educational policies.
