ABSTRACT

This chapter is an ethnographic study seeking to account for the educational choices of the urban Gujjars of Delhi. The data was collected from an urban village in Delhi, to analyse shifts in educational choices. The study finds that systemic and community forces, as well as the cultural ethos of the parents and the community, play a role in determining the educational choices of this Gujjar community. Moreover, the study reveals a significant relationship between education and material benefit, which has downplayed the importance of education for overall growth. The stereotype attached to the community plays a significant role in hindering the process of the smooth acceptance of its members into institutions of higher education.
