ABSTRACT

The biopsychosocial (i.e., biological, psychological, and socio-cultural) approach to health and well-being is a foundational framework for injury prevention and rehabilitation in athletic settings. Interprofessional care teams, including mental health and performance services, for injury prevention and rehabilitation with elite athletes are highlighted. Resources are provided to help interprofessional care members identify biopsychosocial factors that may increase elite athletes’ risk of injury or cause psychological distress during injury rehabilitation. The referral process for elite athletes with mental performance issues and potential clinical mental health concerns is presented. Finally, two case studies focused on biopsychosocial factors for injury prevention and during injury rehabilitation are provided. Following the case studies, guidelines are offered to help interprofessional care team members work together to develop elite athletes’ self-management skills for effectively addressing their biopsychosocial needs.
