ABSTRACT

Resilience in competitive sport is often attributed to an individual or team who succeeds despite adversity. To date, the majority of resilience literature has focused primarily on performance outcomes, limiting our understanding with regard to mental health outcomes. This chapter reviews the current resilience research addressing the relationship between resilience and mental health in sport. The authors present a synthesis of the literature outlining associated assets and risk factors of resilience at both the individual and environmental level. Findings highlight the need for more longitudinal research and intervention studies. A summary of key practical implications for coaches, practitioners, and researchers is provided as a guide for applying resilience development towards positive mental health in sport.
