ABSTRACT

At some point, all psychology students must take their first research methods course. Many of them have never been exposed to this type of class before, and it can be a bit daunting during the first few days as they are told just how much work is required to get through the course. The Student Survival Guide includes a wide array of discussions, ranging from communication skills and small group-work dynamics to conducting experiments, running statistical tests, and writing the different sections of a research paper. Even students in a higher-level research methods course who may need some extra assistance with one or more of these topics can benefit. All the steps needed to create, carry out, analyze, and report a psychology experiment are addressed in detail from the point of view of both an established research methods professor and a post-baccalaureate psychology student, in the hopes that students can feel more confident as they make their way through their research methods course.
