ABSTRACT

Although many research methods students have already been through a few college courses by the time they make it to this class, many of them may not feel comfortable or confident communicating with their professors. Whether communicating with a professor through email or in person, students should practice speaking respectfully and concisely. It is important to consider the differences between email and face-to-face interactions, as each of them is best executed in different ways. Typing emails to professors is much like writing letters, as they must have a level of formality to them. They must include a student’s name, class affiliation, and a clear question or comment for the professor to respond to. Speaking with a professor in person can be the more stressful of the two options but is often necessary. Well-spoken students will speak respectfully, concisely, genuinely, and truthfully with their professors. All of these will help students and professors build rapport and trust with one another, which is not only important during their time together in the course but also for establishing a lasting professional relationship.
