ABSTRACT

Addressing Sustainable Development Goal 5, achieving gender equality and empowerment of women and girls in transport, this chapter takes a holistic approach to exploring the mobility challenges women face in Pakistan and Malaysia. Ethnographic and empathic approaches were used to understand women’s mobility at different stages of their life. The ‘10 stages of women’ framework presents a contrast to the normative ‘7 ages of men’ model, showing the interrelationship of transport, age and gender. The framework was used to develop system maps to reveal a more holistic and actionable representation of the barriers and enablers faced by women in Pakistan and Malaysia, pinpointing areas for action.
