ABSTRACT

This chapter is intended to serve as a summary of ideas and to set the context for case studies in the follow-on chapter. It discusses how our relationship with nature and the natural world is increasingly being defined by urban lifestyles, which involve a modern interpretation of nature in relation to the typology of urban environments. We are still defined by our need to experience nature, and how we interface with natural and biophilic systems in our daily lives is a fundamental consideration. Ideas are discussed under the remit of moving from theory to practice, and include: adopting an ecocentric approach; the environment as a socio-ecological system; the importance of the human-nature bond; the remit of professionals and instilling confidence and skills to access biophilic-related experiences. Reference is made to pathways to actions, initiatives and activities which underpin confident use.
