ABSTRACT

In Hong Kong, there have been calls for the promotion of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education to formulate strategies for STEM education in schools, in order to meet the needs of society in terms of innovation and technology development. This chapter presents an overview of the government's policies on innovation and technology and STEM education, presenting the policies’ emphasis on STEM in the Policy Addresses over the past few years (2015–2020). The initiatives provided by the Education Bureau in Hong Kong include the integration of STEM in the school curriculum, coding education, review of the school curriculum, and training for the STEM teaching force. The implementation of the STEM education policies is demonstrated through discussing the extent and types of STEM learning opportunities in schools, the diversity of out-of-school STEM activities in different associations, the collaboration with tertiary institutes for teacher professional development, and teachers’ views of keys and barriers for school STEM integration. It can be concluded that the supportive policy context in Hong Kong to a large extent leads to greater STEM education in and/or outside of schools.
