ABSTRACT

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education in Malaysia has received attention since 2010 from the Ministry of Education, and thus related STEM education initiatives have been introduced in the Malaysian Education Blueprint (2013–2025). This chapter first provides a historical background to the development of STEM education policies in Malaysia, then describes how policies at the national level have driven the various initiatives at all implementation levels. The central strategy is developing STEM teachers’ competencies in conceptualising and instructing STEM education. The national curriculum introduces relevant subject matters into the national primary and secondary curriculum to promote STEM competencies. STEM education policies in Malaysia also extend to the role of non-formal education in realising the policies. Finally, a reflection on the policies and initiatives implemented aims to suggest the way forward for STEM education in Malaysia.
