ABSTRACT

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education is widely regarded as crucial to national success in addressing global challenges that span national borders. STEM education prepares students to become scientifically and technologically literate and to contribute to an employable workforce. Many have argued that through STEM education, students develop critical skills and dispositions such as problem-solving skills, critical thinking, creativity, curiosity, decision making, leadership, and entrepreneurship. Science education in Bhutan has existed and prevailed through many ages in its history of foundation as a nation. In the recent move, there have been attempts to adopt an integrated approach to STEM education when science subjects have been traditionally taught in isolation for many decades. Currently, schools and higher educational institutions in Bhutan are being exposed to the ideas of integrated STEM education approaches. The government's priority to enhance STEM education has led to new and growing efforts to better understand and implement STEM curriculum. This chapter provides a narrative of the educational and technological milestones, with emphasis on the current focus on STEM education, in Bhutan.
