ABSTRACT

Sleep disturbances, fatigue, and pain impact a substantial number of older adults. Approximately 25–34% of older adults meet the criteria for a sleep disorder and half report symptoms of sleep disturbance. Additionally, 31% of older adults endorse significant symptoms of fatigue, and 60–75% of older adults report persistent pain. This chapter provides a general introduction to sleep, fatigue, and pain in older adults, and the related disorders most commonly diagnosed in older adults. It also provides a review of the correlates of sleep disorders, fatigue, and pain disorders and discusses how each relates to physical and mental health, cognition and daily functioning, and neurodegenerative disorders in older adults. Lastly, when relevant, the chapter provides information on empirically supported treatments for certain disorders.
