ABSTRACT

The focus of this chapter is on the forensic assessment of elder adults. Because the population of the United States is aging, it is incumbent on practitioners to be aware of the various challenges that may arise when evaluating the older adult and how these assessments may vary from younger adults. The first part of this chapter addresses the following issues relevant for the assessment of the older adult: comorbidities, unique psychometric considerations, collateral sources, and technological issues. Key findings and considerations are addressed in each area. The second part of this chapter details common forensic evaluations for the older adult including civil capacity/guardianship, testamentary capacity, and competency to stand trial. The clinical context of each, as well as illustrative research, is presented.
